'THE HURT LOCKER' DOMINATES THE 82ND ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS

The Hurt Locker won big last night (Sunday, March 8th) at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood, scoring Oscars in some of the night's most prestigious categories, including best director and best picture. The Iraq War drama beat out the nine other best picture-nominated films -- winning six of nine awards. The event's other leading nominated film, Avatar, scored three nominations, including visual effects. It was a night of firsts for some categories and nominees. Kathryn Bigelow took home best director for The Hurt Locker, marking the first time a woman has ever won an Oscar in the category. Bigelow and The Hurt Locker beat out her ex-husband James Cameron and his high-grossing flick, Avatar in several other categories, including sound mixing and sound editing. Jeff Bridges scored the best actor award for his role as a country music star in Crazy Heart. He's been nominated a total of five times, but this was his first-ever win. First time best actress nominee Sandra Bullock won for her role in The Blind Side, which meant Meryl Streep went home Oscar-less for the 16th time. Supporting-acting Oscars went to Mo'Nique for Precious and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. Mo'Nique is the fifth black woman to take home an acting Oscar.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The show opened with all of the best actress and actor nominees on stage together.
  • Neil Patrick Harris got the night rolling with a song and dance performance -- "No One Wants To Do It Alone."
  • Hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin descended from the air holding hands. They called out various nominees in the audience, poking fun at everyone from Merryl Streep and Sandra Bullock to James Cameron and Woody Harrelson. They pointed out that 16 nominations for Streep equal the most losses and said Harrelson looked high. George Clooney was playing absolutely stoned-face while Martin and Baldwin poked fun at him.
  • While presenting with Steve Carell, Cameron Diaz joked that she was actually supposed to present with Jude Law.
  • The Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow, calling her an "extraordinary and visionary filmmaker. He dedicated his Oscar win to the troops still in Iraq and Afghanistan, and remembered his father who died a month ago.
  • Best supporting actor winner Christoph Waltz said, "Quentin (Tarantino) with his unorthodox methods of navigation, this fearless explorer, took this ship across and brought it in with flying colors, and that's why I'm here. This is your welcoming embrace, and there's no way I can ever thank you enough."
  • While presenting with Amanda Seigfried, Miley Cyrus said that they were nervous.
  • Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick paid special tribute to late director John Hughes. Some "Brat Pack" actors appeared on stage for the dedication, including Macaulay Culkin, Ally Sheedy, Jon Cryer, Judd Nelson and Anthony Michael Hall.
  • Presenter Ben Stiller showed up on stage decked out in Avatar gear, sporting the full Na'vi costume and make-up. He said, "This seemed like a better idea in rehearsal. It was between this and the Nazi uniform but the show seemed a little Hitler heavy."
  • While accepting her award Mo'Nique said, "I would like to thank the academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics."
  • Maggie Gyllenhall seemed to cry during clips of her own movie, Crazy Heart.
  • Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart introduced a horror film tribute.
  • James Taylor performed a version of the Beatles "In My Life" to honor the lives lost over the past year.
  • Many bloggers commented that Farrah Fawcett was left out of the tribute.
  • This year's event didn't include live performances of the best original song nominees. Instead, the musical number of the night featured interpretive dance.
  • Tim Robbins, Colin Farrell, Vera Farmiga, Julianne Moore and Michelle Pfeiffer presented Best Actor.
  • Best Actress montage -- Presenting nominees were Michael Sheen, Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Stanley Tucci and Peter Sarsgaard.
  • Bridges received a standing ovation upon receiving the best actor award for his role in Crazy Heart. He went on to give a long speech, revealing how his parents inspired him to get into showbiz, noting, "Thank you mom and dad for turning me onto such a groovy profession."
  • While accepting the best actress award, Sandra Bullock said, "Did I really earn this or did I just wear y'all down?" Bullock individually acknowledged all of the other nominees and got choked up while thanking her late mother.
  • While accepting best director, Bigelow said, "There's no other way to describe it. It's the moment of a lifetime. It's so extraordinary to be in the company of my fellow nominees, such powerful filmmakers, who have inspired me and I have admired, some of them for decades."
  • The show ran a half over it's scheduled time, prompting Steve Martin to conclude that it was so long -- Avatar now takes place in the past.

OSCAR COMMENTARY

 OSCAR FASHION

Trends: Jewel tones! Silver, gold, beads, diamonds! From Sandra to JLo and Cameron, the red carpet was sparkling!

BEST OF THE RED CARPET

  • Sandra Bullock: "If I don't get an Oscar . . . at least I'll look like one!"
  • Meryl Streep: Way to pull off white! Impressive. The low cut, simple gown is one of her all time bests.
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal: Best tie-dying on the red carpet, ever! She managed to look stunning in the blue-black splashed gown.
  • Miley Cyrus: Looking like a 30-year-old is better than looking like an 18-year-old, at least in the eyes of her critics.
  • Amanda Seyfried/Jennifer Lopez: I didn't know they were getting married after the show! Smart to combine two special occasions in one night.
  • Gabourey Sidibe: The best of her gowns all season!
  • Rachel McAdams: Again with the tie-dye-ish look. A flowing gown that would make any woman feel beautiful.
  • Cameron Diaz: Another one in gold! Color of the night?

WORST OF THE RED CARPET

  • Charlize Theron: "No one ever comments on my boobs . . . I shall outline them so that you do."
  • Zoe Saldana: You have to be amazingly beautiful to still look decent in her purple-y flower-y foo-foo gown.
  • Kathryn Bigelow: If you're going to pick something off the rack -- go to the adult, not the prom section . . .
  • Nicole Richie: Very demure for the former wild child. Kind of boring though. I've done that hairdo on myself before hopping on the treadmill. . .
  • Diane Kruger: It was a good attempt to control the peach fluff with black ribbon. Not sure if she succeeded. . .
  • Vera Farmiga: Very interesting red ruffles. . . and there were a lot of ruffles.
  • Sarah Jessica Parker: Is she trying to cover up a pregnancy? That seems like the only excuse for this sack-ish jeweled -- bag?

SO-SO ON THE RED CARPET

  • Demi Moore: Peaches 'n cream ('n Botox) Barbie!
  • Tina Fey: Fine, black, plain, whatever. She's always so boring. . .
  • Mo'Nique: She picked a stand-out shade of blue. Very smart for the actress, who shouldn't be looking to stand out with a daring cut.
  • Mariah Carey: Okay. Not too good, not too bad. Better putting the leg on display than the boobs!

MEN ON THE RED CARPET

  • Christoph Waltz: No one told him that Brad Pitt's beard didn't go over well. No need to copy. . .
  • Zac Efron: It's not that hard to style plain, short, man-hair! How come you showed up with bed head??
  • Jay Manuel: We've never seen a jacket quite like that of the E! red carpet commentator. Fashion critique by a man wearing a curtain/snakeskin jacket. Interesting . . .
  • Keanu Reeves: Wolverine! Oh wait, no, just Keanu with bad facial hair . . .
  • Robert Downey Jr.: Yikes . . . blue bow tie? Blue tinted glasses? Just stick to the classics from now on.

SANDRA BULLOCK SHOWS UP TO ACCEPT TWO RAZZIES

Sandra Bullock was the focus at yet another awards show on Saturday (March 6th) -- this time the 2010 Razzies, where she was named worst actress of the year and worst on-screen couple with Bradley Cooper for their comedy, All About Steve. Bullock, who showed up to Hollywood's Barnsdall Gallery Theater pulling a wagon filled with All About Steve DVDs, said to the crowd, "I thought no one went to see this film, but I know that there are more than 700 members here." She continued, "I brought the shooting script. I'm willing to go through page by page, read the line the way I did it in the film and, if anyone wants to give me a line read of how I could've done it better . . . We can do this till about 4 o'clock in the morning. Or you guys can just watch the movie and rethink your decision, and I'll show up next year and we can go out for a drink afterward." As for the worst couple award, Bullock noted, "Again, if you had seen the film, seen it with your eyes, it's pretty much a film about a woman stalking a man. That doesn't really set up the premise for a loving couple. So giving us the worst couple award is kind of, duh."

JENNA ELFMAN GIVES BIRTH

Jenna Elfman gave birth to a son last week in Los Angeles. The 38-year-old Accidentally on Purpose star announced the birth of Easton Quinn Monroe Elfman via Twitter on Friday (March 5th), writing, "He's an impressive sleeper (thank god!)& I'm his biggest fan. Thank you all so much for your kind words and congrats. We really appreciate it." The actress and her husband Bohdi Elfman also have a two-and-a-half-year-old son named Story Elias.

TIGER WOODS UPDATES

TIGER WOODS JOKES YANKED FROM OSCAR SHOW: Producers for the Academy Awards reportedly deleted a series of rude Tiger Woods jokes from the script. A source told the New York Post that writers penned a series of cracks about the Woods' scandal for hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, but the producers decided against them. "Some of the Tiger jokes were deemed too rude," said the source.
AMAZING KRESKIN SAYS TIGER WILL NEVER LIVE DOWN THE SCANDAL: Noted mentalist the Amazing Kreskin predicted Saturday that while Woods will reign once more on the golf links, his fan base will never recover from his sex scandal. And the main problem is his sport, which doesn't provide the fast action that football and basketball provides to distract fans. "Golf, unlike football, is a pastoral sport. It's like a painting on a horizon which you can see and gaze and spread your eyes over. It's an extraordinarily slow-moving sport," the 75-year-old Kreskin told the New York Daily News. "Unlike [other sports], it would be impossible for any human being who knows his story to watch him play, frequently reflecting and thinking in that down time about the scandal of his life."
CADDY SAYS HE WOULD HAVE BLOWN WHISTLE ON TIGER: Tiger's caddy Steve Williams says he would not have kept Tiger's cheating secrets. "I'm a straight-up sort of person," Williams told New Zealand's TV3. "If I had known something was going on, the whistle would have been blown." He said he hasn't relaly spoken to Woods since the scandal broke. "Of course I'm mad at him, why would you not be? I'm close with his wife and he's got two lovely children and he's let them down," he said, adding that he wouldn't abandon his buddy. "When a guy's having a tough time, it's not up to me to beat him with a stick right now. He's getting enough grilling from everybody else." TIGER & ELIN HOME TOGETHER TO REBUILD HIS IMAGE: Tiger has returned home to Florida after two separate stints in rehab, and there's still no divorce on the horizon. Though Elin and the children had reportedly been living in a separate home, now reports say that Tiger and Elin are attempting to share a home again. "The marriage is all smoke and mirrors, but Elin will help Tiger rebuild his image and gain new sponsorships because this is what his life is all about," a source told People.com; "She is doing this more for the kids and holding the family together then anything else." The united family front will also soothe ruffled sponsors, according to the source. "Elin will put a new face on platonic relationships," the source says.

THE GIRLS SHOW IMPROVEMENT ON 'AMERICAN IDOL'

A recovered Crystal Bowersox started off the night's performances and received rave reviews from the judges. Haeley Vaughn was the next contestant to sing. The judges harshly criticized her version of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb." Vaughn was not the only contestant of the night to receive harsh criticism. Katie Stevens was asked once again to find a "younger" song and Didi Benami was torn apart for her version of "Lean on Me." Lacey Brown decided to take Kara's advice and sing "Kiss Me," which gained her a few compliments. Although Lilly Scott did fairly well, she was unhappy when Simon compared her to Bowersox. It was the final contestant, Siobhan Magnus, who impressed the judges with her high note in Aretha Franklin's "Think."

JAMES CAMERON WOULD BE OKAY WITH OSCARS 'AVATAR' SKIT

Cameron said he wasn't aware that a proposed Avatar sketch involving Ben Stiller and Sacha Baron Cohen had been cut from the show, but said, "I don't know anything about that . . . I don't produce the Oscars. If they want to poke fun at Avatar Sunday, that's OK by me." But would it be? The Oscars are known for being a little bit more "stuffy then typical awards show. Either way, the sketch was removed from the broadcast.

SACHA BARON COHEN'S 'AVATAR' SKIT PULLED FROM OSCARS

What likely would have been the night's funniest moment has been nixed from the Oscar broadcast. New York Magazine reports that Sacha Baron Cohen had planned to appear on stage at the show as a blue-skinned Na'vi who is having James Cameron's love child, but his skit has been pulled because producers were scared he might offend James Cameron.

LADY GAGA'S PERSONA INSPIRES MUPPETS CHARACTER

Lady Gaga's persona will likely serve as the inspiration behind a new character in the upcoming project, The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made. How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel is reportedly writing the script with Gaga as the model for Miss Piggy's character. A source tells HollywoodLife.com that Segel envisions the modern Miss Piggy living an indulgent and arty life overseas, explaining, "Miss Piggy ends up becoming like a Lady Gaga-esque character living in Europe. Kermit ends up being destitute and the main characters find him living in squalor." Those outrageous outfits, hairdos and make-up Gaga wears take a bit of work. But the pop star wouldn't have it any other way. She tells London's Evening Standard that it's important to maintain style both on and off the stage, saying, "I would rather die than have my fans not see me in a pair of high heels. I'd never give up my wigs and hats for anything." She adds, "You see legendary people taking out their trash, I think it's destroying show business. I feel completely detached from the celebrity world, you never see me falling out of nightclubs." Gaga feels like a bit of an outsider, admitting, "I'm an outcast from the music industry. I don't have any friends in the music business. People in Britain are the ones who've really been my friends." Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper continue to promote the M.A.C. Viva Glam line to raise HIV and AIDS awareness among women. There's been talk about a possible collaboration among Gaga, Lauper and Madonna. When asked about it on CNN, Lauper said, "I don't know. Who knows? You always keep it open."

MO'NIQUE DISCUSSES OPEN MARRIAGE AND HAIRY LEGS

Mo'Nique and her husband Sidney have an open marriage -- sort of. The Academy Award nominee delved into some very personal topics during her interview for Barbara Walters's Oscar special, admitting that she's okay with Sidney sleeping around and he's okay with her not shaving her legs. The Precious actress told Walters, "Let me say this: I have not had sex outside my marriage with Sidney. Could Sid have sex outside of his marriage with me? Yes. That's not a deal-breaker. That's not something that would make us say, 'Pack your things and let's end the marriage.'"She added that it doesn't matter how often he strays, explaining, "What if it's 20 times? So what? We've been best friends for over 25 years, and we truly know who we are. Oftentimes, people get into marriages and they don't know who they're laying next to. I'm very comfortable and secure with my husband."

'DANCING WITH THE STARS' PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED

The pairings for the new season of Dancing With the Stars were revealed yesterday morning. Familiar faces like Karina Smirnoff, Kym Johnson and Lacey Schwimmer won't be back on the dance floor this year, making room for newcomer Damian Whitewood who will mark his debut with Pamela Anderson. Kate Gosselin and her partner -- Tony Dovolani -- appeared on Good Morning America and talked about their chances of snagging the mirror ball. Both said that they're in it to win it, but Kate admitted that she's not a very good dancer -- yet. Gosselin will be training in her Pennsylvania basement so that she can be with her kids and plans on commuting for the live shows. She admitted, "I have eight kids, and I'm a mom and I have a very full schedule anyway. Obviously, the kids come first. It's going to be hard. I'm determined to do it."

CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES INVESTIGATES JACKSON FAMILY

The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services reportedly went to investigate at the Jackson Family compound in Encino, California, on Monday night after Jermaine Jackson's 13-year-old son Jafar was found in possession of a stun gun that he had ordered on the Internet. Someone at the house contacted the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services, who showed up on Monday evening and again on Tuesday to interview Katherine Jackson, Jafar, and some of the Jackson cousins about the incident. Michael's children Prince, Paris, and Blanket also live at the Encino house but reportedly did not handle the weapon. On Tuesday, Katherine Jackson issued a statement about the incident through her attorney: "Two weeks ago, Jermaine Jackson's 13-year old son, Jafar, who lives with his mother Alejandra at the home of Mrs. Katherine Jackson, received a package with a tazer he ordered online. Jafar opened the package alone in his bathroom and tested it on a piece of paper. Mrs. Jackson and security heard the sound coming from the second floor of the house. Immediately, security went upstairs and confiscated the tazer. Mrs. Jackson took control over it and then had it removed from the house. There was no other incident. Blanket Jackson never saw or heard the tazer. Neither did Paris Jackson. Prince saw the tazer in the possession of security. There is no second tazer." She added that the children are all happy and healthy.

ROGER EBERT DEBUTS NEW VOICE ON 'OPRAH'

Roger Ebert, who lost his ability to speak after cancer surgery, tried out a new voice on Tuesday's (March 2nd) Oprah Winfrey Show. Computer programmers at a Scottish company captured the famed film critic's voice from hours of commentary tracks so that words he typed would be delivered in a tone of his likeness. Ebert had been using off-the-shelf computer voices that didn't sound like him. On Oprah, he said that the new version still needs improvement, but he was happier with the results. He told the talk show host, "In first grade, they said I talk too much. And now I still can."As for his Oscar predictions -- the reason behind his Oprah appearance -- Ebert said he couldn't remember a year when it seemed easier to guess the winners.

WOMAN CLAIMS SHE HAD THREESOME WITH BROOKE MUELLER AND CHARLIE SHEEN

The Charlie Sheen-Brooke Mueller saga continues to grow more scandalous. RadarOnline.com reports that the couple would have threesomes with other women -- and one is coming forward to dish on her experiences with the couple. An insider told Radar, "Brooke is bisexual. She and Charlie have had more than one woman share their bed in the short time they've been married." Another source added, "Some of the women they slept with together also did drugs with them." Brooke is currently being treated at home for crack and alcohol addictions while Charlie entered rehab last week, supposedly for cocaine and alcohol. The source said that it's unclear if the woman about to come forward saw the couple do drugs. According to Radar, the woman will tell her story within the next two weeks.

THE GUYS CHOOSE BETTER SONGS ON 'AMERICAN IDOL'

Although the girls were scheduled to perform last night on AI, the guys took the stage. Crystal Bowersox was unable to perform under medical orders, which forced the men to be camera-ready. Michael Lynche kicked off the show, performing "A Man's World," which made the judges proud. John Park was the next to perform and delivered what Simon Cowell called a "so what" performance. He wasn't the only contestant to disappoint the judges last night. Toddrick Hall and Jermaine Sellers were both told to "pull back" even more. Casey James received mixed notes from the judges, winning the approval of Randy and Ellen but surprisingly not Kara or Simon. Alex Lambert, however, won over all four judges with his version of John Legend's "Everybody Knows." The episode ended with Lee Dewyze, who once again received high compliments from Simon.

DRIVER ACCUSES NAOMI CAMPBELL OF ASSAULT

A man hired to drive supermodel Naomi Campbell around New York told police she assaulted him from the backseat of his vehicle on Tuesday (March 2nd) before hopping out and running away. The Associated Press reports that police were looking for Campbell and deciding whether to charge her. Her spokesperson said, "There shouldn't be a rush to judgment. Naomi will cooperate voluntarily, and there is more to the story than meets the eye." The driver told police he pulled the black Cadillac Escalade over in midtown Manhattan after Campbell "hit him from behind and his head struck the steering wheel, causing bruising under his right eye."

JESSICA SIMPSON: 'I'M A LITTLE BIT ANGRY' ABOUT JOHN MAYER

Jessica Simpson's full Oprah interview doesn't air until today (Wednesday, March 3rd), but more clips and details continue to leak about what she discusses on the show -- and some of it has to do with John Mayer's comments in Playboy. He told the magazine that his relationship with Simpson was "like napalm, sexual napalm." UsMagazine.com reports that when asked how she felt about the remarks, Simpson says, "There's nothing worse than being disappointed in somebody." Asked if she's angry, Simpson responds, "I'm not angry. I'm -- well, I'm a little bit angry." So what is she angry about? The 29-year-old star says, "I don't want people to know how I am in bed. I mean, I guess I could have been a lot worse!" Simpson also says she's comfortable with her current weight, explaining, "I love my curves. I'm not going to ever be size 0, and I don't want to weigh 90 pounds." When Winfrey tells her that she looked like she weighed 90 pounds. in 2005's The Dukes of Hazzard, Simpson says, "I didn't weigh 90 pounds. But I was -- I was definitely smaller. But that was Daisy Duke, that's a role. I was playing a role. I don't want to look like Daisy Duke every day. I don't want to wear a bathing suit every day." Simpson's new show, The Price Of Beauty, premieres March 15th on VH1.

SIMON COWELL ADMITS HE'S OCCASIONALLY TOO HARD ON CONTESTANTS

Love must be mellowing out Simon Cowell. In a startling admission, Simon acknowledged that sometimes he is too hard on the reality show contestants that he judges. The 50-year-old, who judges American Idol, X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, said during an upcoming interview on Piers Morgan's Life Stories, "There's many, many times where I've watched the show back and I'm absolutely appalled. You do the show, you're not aware of what's happening in the room outside."He explained, "You know, somebody just said, 'My dog Lassie died yesterday,' I'm in a bad mood and, you know, awful, and you see it in that context, it's very, very difficult to watch."
